Plovdiv by Katerina

05.08.2010

Plovdiv is nice. You feel a great blow of history and ancient atmosphere. You drink the pure energy of past times. It’s a true paradise to disappear from time’s borders. Many many layers - starting with the Thracian settlement, being established by Romans – it has a lot in common with Italian cities, a great breeched mosque with the stone carving. It’s so empty when you are getting into the old school – museum as it is waiting for us. It’s a good welcoming feeling. People here are very accurate and historically-aware about their own cultural treasure. It’s visible how they save, collect and research the evidences of their own past. Going down the street we popped into souvenir’s store where mostly collected traditional traces from different regions.

Not only powerful stone architecture is made for centuries, they preserve some islands of living traditions. And it’s cool.

This is my favorite city in Bulgaria so far.

This city is full of museums and churches. As I am so into literature and culture, this city is just the paradise of me.

Plus, with Rumi’s grandparents perfect home-made food, I want to be adopted by Rumi’s parents.

In the first night, Tao and I cooked Chinese food for everyone. Maybe not that delicious, but we’ve tried our best. Hope everyone likes it.

We gonna spend 2 more days in Plovdiv, hope to see more interesting things here.

The following day we travelled by train to Plovdiv. And despite of what some of our friends were talking about trains in Bulgaria it was quite good:). Maybe they are not the fastest ones, but at least they weren’t dirty and when we opened the windows it wasn’t so hot. And we could admire the views and take some pictures from the platform outside the train.

But we didn’t know that the best part of the day is still waiting for us. We arrived to Plovdiv late in the evening and we stayed at Rumi’s house (which is great btw;)). Just the opportunity to take a shower was a magic moment, but it started to be better and better! We’ve met Rumi’s grandparents and we had a dinner at their place. It was really great time, not only because the food was delicious ( I mean DELICIOUS) but mostly because of grandparents – they are very friendly and open and despite language barrier we were able to understand each other very well:)

I’m so happy to be here!

The next morning we climbed the Pirin mountain. Finally, we got to a place very near the top, exhausted...But the views are fantastic! Sunshine through the trees, wild flowers all around, and you can smell the soil after the rain, hear the sound of stream. Standing on the rock, looking out those mountains far away and around by smoke, I enjoyed all these moments.

After the close touch with the nature, we arrived at the culture center of Bulgaria——Plovdiv. In the first night, we cooked Chinese food(I hope you all enjoy it). I feel myself fall in love with this city when I walked through the center square occupied with variety of painting and jewelry stalls; when I stared at Mosque Djumaya with the mysterious holy song in a Friday afternoon; when we paid visits of so many churches, museums and the old city. I love this city, with its history of seven hills, just like the great Rome.

We interviewed many people on our travel in order to know more about Bulgaria. Though many of them complained about the government, do not satisfy with the life here now, I still see lots of good points. They are friendly, open-minded, they try to tell you what is happening here, try to accept the world and be tolerant to the history. It's obvious that many problems exist in this country because of the huge social change(it's just the same in China), but you can see changes and efforts. Many people try to make differences and be positive. That's what really important.

At last, I want to say thank you to Roumi and her family, I really enjoy the days here in your family. I like the pig stomach soup, the pepper, the soya source, the dishes we ate last night(I don't know the name), the cakes(with strawberry in the triangle) and so on(everything!). I like your family members, your grandparents(I stole a kiss from your grandma), your boy friend(don't worry I don't mean that "like") and his sister(I really like her, excellent woman). Thanks a million, say thank you to your family. It will be the most previous and unforgettable memory.

Day 3

On Thursday in the morning, when we were in the Pirin mountain, we couldn`t go to the top like we were intending to do early in the morning because of the rain. Then we wake up later and went walk around the mountains. Was fantastic, we had breakfast around the mountains looking the nature and sharing some laughing … good and unforgettable moment. Is amazing the view inside the mountains is magic. About 2pm our bus arrived to pick us up to take us to the train station when we will take the train to go to Plovid.

We spent the whole afternoon in the train having fun still arrive in Plovid. When we arrive here was something like 9pm and was very very hot. I asked Rumy about it, and she said me that is because Plovid is in a valley between the mountains because of it is hotter here than in the others cities in Bulgary. We took a bus and arrived in Rumy`s apartment. Here is amazing, we came to the heel to the sky again. This is the best way the describe how we are happy here and definitely don`t wanna move anymore J There is kitchen, air conditioning, beautiful bathroom, washing machine, comfortable beds, everything we need but better. We met Rumy`s grandparents in our first night here, they are amazing, very sweet and gentle with us. They live in the same build that we are living here, and everyday we go there to have our meals like dinner and breakfast. Is our chance to be healthy here, we ate greats foods everyday. I don`t know how describe it, we really are in the paradise here. And we try to reattribute all the kindness they have with us make them laughing all the time. Rsrs I bring with me my dictionary English to Bulgary and I try sometimes to say some words in Bulgary , and this is the most special skill of our team : WE LAUGH ALL THE TIME, rsrs. Did you get the point? Rsrs – This was our first night here

Today we wake up and went to eat a traditional Bulgary`s food called Banitsa that Rumy`s grandmother cooked for us. Is a kind of bread with white cheese, so nice. And we ate it with yogurt, tea and some watermelons. Every meal we have here, we always come back to our room so full because we ate a lot. As mom is the same anywhere, grandmothers are the same. Always love to cook for us and try to make us fat, rsrs. They are so gentle.

In the afternoon we went to explore Plovdiv. We walked and visit famous places like Regional History Museum Plovdiv, Turkey church, Ancient Roman Theatre and two orthodox christian churches. Plovid is so beautiful, the architecture of the buildings are so Nice, the streets here are very interesetring, is clean, and there aren`t a lot of dogs like there are in Sofia here they have cats in the streets (is better than big and hungry dogs). Is a nice city, I`m really liking a lot here. This is my favorite city that I have been here in Bulgary. The most special moment of our day was when we were in the roman theatre and started to rain. Me, Rumy and Muricio went under the rain and had fun. Very nice I will never forget it. Rumy and everybody here are so special for me, I`m really very fine here. I`m loving this trip …

Bansko and Pirin mountain by Mauricio Mizutani

In the Bansko city center, you can see a beautiful monument with some written in the stones commenting the history about the place. Another important building in the city is a church. Inside of this church the design is the same of the Rila’s Monastery, but smaller and not so imposing like the Monastery. The last one who I could see was a Museum named by a famous poet who was born in Bansko and wrote beautiful and important stuffs against the Balkan war and about love. This poet dead young, but make his story here. About the economy, I think that is much better in the winter, because how I could see in souvenir stores, most of the gifts were with photos in the winter. Other stuff that is important writing is that the city is cleaner than Sofia and other cities who I visited. The garden here is more beautiful than other cities too, just because here looks like they care about this stuff.

A quiet flower town cut from stone. Streets are cozy and narrow. It’s light burning with mild colours. It looks relaxed. But if you have a deeper look at it you understand it is enjoyng its own honoured peacefulness.

It looks that such towns live their own historical life, they still remember, feel deeply the times of changes, its youth, its passionate characters. Revolutions, wars, love, emancipating - but years are passing by –there is a museum about Nicola Vaptsarov, a great poet and revolutioner, a wonderful house with so well-preserved interior of late 19th century: dishes, beds, old furniture, old weaving, sewing devices for wool cotton clothes. Here you can breath the air of past times, fresh air of ancient gorgeous mountains.
After a walking we were getting higher and higher in rounds of paths to the tourist base. Here we were circled by huge severe nature - the temperature got lower rapidly in 20 degrees. We, tired exhausted ramblers, got a shelter in a room with many beds, wooden, yellow, room where we had a lot of fun and stories to tell.

Next day guys had a great chance to taste a mountain. I had a chance to talk to locals. People have a good business here. Since the Soviet times when the place developed as an important touristic, sport destination which was popular mostly between socialistic countries, they still keep traditions of past times. I’ve seen already so many folklore things. But the nearer one to nature, the more one needs proved by time equipment and comfortable things.

Now here come people mostly from Central and Eastern Europe. We saw some old rock-climbers. But they were so heavy-equipped, looks as we didn’t understand the whole danger of slipping wet tricky stones, steppe routes, but I know children of mountains never use anything special to climb.

People.

People are very welcoming, they are eager to talk, eager to be on the photos. A man in the train tried to speak 5 or 6 languages in order to look welcoming and friendly to us. It’s nice. I noticed people here almost always know some other languages, at least understand them. But the region of Bolgaria has always lied on the way of trading and move of nations. So it was always in many contacts with different great cultures.

But the other thing about them through years of hard life they learnt how to be joyful and tolerant. Fortunately I experienced only a good side of communication with locals.

In my first night in Sofia in middle of a night I came with one Holland guy to a great youth “Hostel-Mostel”. And then I was scouring around the city in hope to get somewhere a possibility to call my mum, ‘cause she doesn’t use Internet . And in one Icafe I was given a cell phone from a guy with the OK - phone Russia!!”

One thing for sure – Pirim Mountains are for tough guys.

When we arrived to Bansko we saw a typical ski resort – a beautiful small town with lovely streets and friendly people. But when we climbed up the mountains it appeared that we can feel real nature. Our shelter was situated in the middle of wild woods and it wasn’t a spa for sure – one bathroom for around 50 people, toilet outside the building and 10- person rooms with poor light. But… It means nothing comparing to the outstanding views, experience of the nature and reallyfresh air:) It’s just a pity we couldn’t climb up the pick of the Vihren, because of the rain.

So anyway, this place is a perfect spot for wanderers and people enjoying pure nature.

It was the most amazing experience in my life.

One night in the mountainous area, 9 people shared 1 room, heavy rain outside, cold, not well-organized villa, but the most amazing product of the nature outside the window.

I think the most beautiful scenery outside can compete every bad things there.

It was amazing, climbing on the mountain to see the huge trees, hard stones, sunshine, and even the cute strawberries on both sides of the road. That’s too impressive.

If I have a chance, I will go to Bansko in winter next time.

Well, Bansko, I like it very much. It's quite impressive because we never see such village in China. Bansko has very blue sky, and the streets is clean. People here lead a easy life, they just need what is enough for basic life. This is really different from people in China, because in China all the people in village want to go out, go to the big city to earn more money. And what's more, cities are always better and cleaner than small towns and villages. Bansko is just like a village in the painting.

At night we live in a villa on Pirin mountain. It's fucking funny because all of us share one room...and...they have a amazing toilet outside which is just a triangle hole. I got unforgettable experience that night, though it was rain heavily outside, we got close to each other and share all the experience in the warm(well, maybe..haha) room.

Day 2 04.08.2010

We left Blagoevgrad at 11h30 and arrive and Bansko about 12h30. When we arrived in the bus station we walked a lot with our heavy backpacks above a hard sun until arrived in the center of the city. Bansko is a small city, there aren`t any bus here just taxi, because the city really is small. After we left our stuff in the room we went explore more the town. We visited the museum Nicola V., where we listened the traditional song in Bansko. Is slowly, and with hard crashes. Rumy told us that the traditional musics in Bansko are this way, because they really passed for strong things then the musics describe their feelings about how everything they lived In Bulgaria.

At 5pm our bus arrived to pick us up and take us to the mountain called Pirin, where we are now. We are living in a Tourism village, with an amazing view around the mountains. When we arrived here they said us that we just have one room with 9 beds. Everybody start to laughing incredible. When we come inside the room was so funny, 9 beds one beside one so funny. And we continue laughing for a long time, because when we try to use the bathroom here we really just could laugh. There is just two bathroom for everybody that is living in this village, one inside the build and another one outside. And really was funny because we couldn`t believe in the conditions of that bathrrom: without a good smell, dirty… I don`t know how describe. But I, Ania, Rumynina and Mauricio were strong to take shower. Now we had dinner and probably will play some games here and tomorrow morning will go to the top of the mountain.

I`m missing my family here a lot. When I don`t feel me comfortable here, I miss the comfortable that I can feel when I`m with them, my friends, my dog and everybody. But I know that this is an unique experience, I have enjoy all the moments .I will miss it after when I came back to my country, I can start to feel it now because I love the people who live with me( maybe because here we are more sensible here). I`m starting to clinging with the people I met here and are living with me this experience. Then when I don`t feel me so fine, I just need to change my toughs and remember it. Sometimes is hard for me, but I know that should be hard for them too.

First day of our incredible journey is over!

Nobody got lost, nobody got hurt- what’s more, everybody was happy and excited:)

We had an amazing day in Rila’s Monastery. It is one of the spots everybody should visit during staying in Bulgaria. It’s situated in beautiful mountain area and it’s well-kept by the monks from the monastery.

I was amazed by this magic place.

Looking forward to all exciting days that will come:)

Ryla for Russian eyes looks very familiar. Though I recognized so beloved and close to my heart Orthodox tradition, I felt it is really different. The surroundings make it look really severe and reserved. Nevertheless it is heartily opened to anybody who wants to get there. Being a popular touristic destination it tries to keep its own independence –it shows a hidden life of monks, students and believers there.

Sincerely I can’t say I deeply explored the nature, spiritual atmosphere of the monastery. A first quick blick at the place like that is always not enough. But the magnificent, gorgeous beauty, bright strong colours of paintings, a fortress-like architecture and tradfitional for orthodox religion interior full of gold, colours, luxury show the way how God can be worshipped.

First day of our travel was really interesting. I enjoyed great views, especially I could not stop admiring the mountains because there is only plains where I live. So, mountains are something new and marvelous for me. I also got great impressions from Rila Monastery. I liked architecture and painting inside. I was important to visit this place for me, because it is part of my culture.

Today we took a 2.5-hour train to go to Blagoevgrad. It was our first day, everyone was excited.

After having arrived Blagoevgrad, Nikki picked us up in the train station. Then we took a bus to the mountainous area to visit the famous Rila monastery.

This monastery is quite amazing. It is the first monastery I’ve ever visited in my life. Every part of the monastery may have a story. There are countless paintings everywhere in the monastery which impressed me a lot. And the sheep milk yogurt is so delicious that I will never forget.

Today is amazing.

Say thanks to all the trainees, Rumi’s efforts and Nikki’s flat.

Rila Monastery (1st)    03.08.2010

The history tells us that this is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria, founded in the 10th century. The Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and it is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe as a whole. As I could see, the monastery is very important for the economy of the city, because of the transportation and sellers who work in the region. My first impression there was more than I was expecting, because the synergy of the background and the hole building (main church, residential part and museum). The main church of the monastery was erected in the middle of the 19th century. Today I could see how imposing the building (both outside and inside) is. I saw one of the most precious items inside is the gold-plated iconostasis, famous for its wood-carving, beyond the legend about candles who you should buy to get more peace, harmony and good vibes. I can imagine that this money is to repair any damage and stuff like this. Around the main church is the residencial part that lots of monks lives there with typical clothes. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to go up stairs or visit some rooms. There is a museum too, but I thought a kite expensive an amount required just for the entrance in the museum.

August 3rd, early morning at 5:15, We started our tour around Bulgaria.

Feeling sleepy in the car toward Blagoevgrad, I wondered how the journey could be. It's really unbelievable that all of us can get together and say "Hello" all the way from countries around the world.

This should be a journey of miracle.

When stepping into the Rila monastery, I was shocked and amazed. Vary differ from all the temples I've seen in China, those black and white walls, paintings above your head and huge domes with cross on the top, bring me a totally new aesthetic experience. This kind of feeling led me continuously to explore every corner and seek for different view.(By the way, the 'Garfield catty' is really funny!)

Sometimes I still can't believe people from different countries with different culture and colors can live in a house and tease each other by some jokes we once though only ourselves understand. Anyway, those people around you DO get the point. Even we feel there may be a wall between us, it will collapse when we try to get know each other.

This is just a start, all the surprises are right there waiting for us. But we never know.

Day 1  03.08.2010

Today we arrived here in Blagoevgrad about 10am/11am. We took the train in Sofia and we took about 2h30min to arrive here. The trip was very nice, the train was adapted for this kind of long trip. We took a good part of the time studying Portuguese, because I was so anxious and couldn`t sleep since last night before we meet us to go to the train station, and laughting a lot with all the jokes that the Chinese girls was doing all the time. Then we arrived soon in Blagoevgrad, and Nick ( work in AIESEC and is organizing the project with the others too) and Tania waiting for us to pick us up to the place we will stay here. We took one bus in the train station and arrived in the Grandfather`s Nick lived ( at least was what I understood). Here we have everything we need : kitchen, beds, bathroom( there is a window inside the bathroom, I couldn`t believe when I saw it) , etc.

We were very tired because of the trip, but had a lot of things to do. We just have time to leave our backpacks and suitcases and go to the bus station where we will take another bus to go to Rila Monastery. This place is almost a small city, near Blagoevgrad that we can find a beautiful church and all the constructions work so hard with a lot of details. When we arrived there, needed to dress a kind of mantle to hide our shoulders. Because in their religion there is a prohibition to show some parts of our body as shoulders, legs etc. After we dressed it, we could come in inside and enjoy the beautiful church and all the huge work in that builds. It`s difficult to describe it because it wasn’t just one more beautiful church, is one more amazing church but with the mountains around it. Really wasn’t so difficult to take good pictures, everything was so beautiful and interesting one more time. After we spent a time visiting inside the church and taking pictures, we went eat a sweet bread that is a traditional food offered here. Is a kind of fried bread that we eat with powdered sugar. Delicious and cheap :)

We finished our tourism in Rila Monastery, take back the bus to arrive so fast in the room to take shower and rest. And, of course, enjoy our kitchen. We cooked pasta with vegetables and chicken made by Katherina and Dasha! It was a tired and hot day, but view around the mountains is compensator.

Tomorrow we will leave Blagoevgrad at 10am and go the Bansko .
